Borussia Dortmund have finished a turbulent campaign – described by Hans-Joachim Watzke as "the most difficult season since the near-bankruptcy" in 2005 – in fourth place, which saw the club achieve its most important objective: UEFA Champions League qualification. But the Black & Yellows only made it over the finish line by the skin of their teeth.

Speaking to BVBtotal! in an interview after the clash with Hoffenheim, Julian Weigl described the 2017/18 season as one with "many lows and few highs". The midfielder said they "got off with a slap on the wrist" in Sinsheim and added that he was not satisfied with his personal performance: "There are a number of things I can improve."

After the match against TSG Hoffenheim, Peter Stöger made clear his position regarding his personal situation: "The discussions with Hans-Joachim Watzke and Michael Zorc were always great. We already decided some time ago that some new impetus would possibly be good for the club, and that this would be most easily injected by way of a new manager."

Speaking in a post-match interview with Sky, Nuri Sahin discussed both the exciting final day in Hoffenheim and the season as a whole. "Even in the deepest crisis back in 2005, I've never experienced this kind of turbulence here at BVB," said Sahin, who did not hold back as he criticised himself and the team as a whole. "We need to be very honest: this year we simply didn't deserve higher than fourth. Each of us needs to take a look in the mirror and ask ourselves what went wrong."
